Our History
Shultz Engineering Group (SEG) has earned its 43-year respected leadership position in the industry through a succession of outstanding projects and excellent client communication and support. David N. Shultz was the Founder and Principal of David Shultz Associates (name change to Shultz Engineering Group in 2010) in 1976. David previously served as the Mechanical Engineering Department Head and Chief Engineer for the 100-man plus Architectural and Engineering firm of Odell Associates, Charlotte, NC. Charles (Charlie) L. Wooten was also a Partner in the growing firm. Charlie had previously served at the Architectural and Engineering firm of LBC&W in Columbia, SC.
SEG originally performed many high profile hospital designs, including the largest open-heart surgery and transplant center in southeast at Carolinas Medical Center; the first 3 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Facilities in the southern US at Medical College of Virginia (American Association of Retailers awarded first place award for Energy), UNC Hospital Center and Carolinas Medical Center. SEG’s first design award was for Sphinx Pharmaceuticals, Durham, NC, (won Regional ASHRAE first Place Award for Technology), a 250,000 SF Scott manufacturing plant to produce fireman’s emergency breathing devices. Notable long-standing repeat clients feature such showcase customers as Belk Department Stores, Shoe Show, Food Lion, CVS Pharmacy, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, UNC-Charlotte, and many more.
SEG initially became well-known for outstanding retail chains, churches, and institution engineering services provided across the United States (licensed in all of continental US). Our expertise quickly expanded to many other critical service areas including military, government, healthcare, commercial and office buildings, education, industrial, hotel, multifamily, energy services, and commission projects. More recently, we increased our capabilities in electrical engineering and commissioning to complement our well-established mechanical and plumbing engineering competencies.
Over the years, SEG has earned numerous prestigious awards and recognitions, including 14 ASHRAE Excellence in Technology Awards, for projects serving Time Warner Adcast, Mountain Neurology Medical Office Building, Fayetteville Festival, AN Restaurant, Union Academy, Matthews Senior Center, and Belk Department Store in Kissimmee, FL.
